Art is one of the last instances in which people give themselves a taste for algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI). But that could change soon. At the end of October, Christie’s auction house is going to sell the first painting of an AI. Expected Price: $ 7,000 to $ 10,000.
Do you know Edmond de Belamy? No? Then you do not have to worry about it anyway. Although his family tree dates back to the 14th century – but the family “de Belamy” is fictitious.
She comes from the brains of the French artist group Obvious . The artists around Hugo Caselles-Dupré have set up an exciting experiment that should have many opponents in the creative industry: an AI who creates paintings.
The result is a series of portraits of the fictitious “de Belamy” family. The first copy – the portrait of Edmond de Belamy – will be auctioned at the Christie’s auction house between October 23rd and 25th .
The art experts assume that the painting of the AI ??will reach a price between 7,000 and 10,000 US dollars. After all, it’s the first of its kind.
The basis for the paintings of Artificial Intelligence is a two-part algorithm. This was fed by the artists in the first step with more than 15,000 portraits from the past 600 years.
In the second part of the process, the builder creates paintings that best fit the style of the era. By the way, while working with the AI, Caselles-Dupré and his colleagues have found that portraits are far easier to imitate than landscapes or nude paintings.
